SURVIVING AND THRIVING IN DECEMBER WITH ROSE FERGUSON

16 December 2022

We’re always on the lookout for tips that will keep us feeling fresh and healthy during the infamously glutinous month of December. This week, we’re speaking with The Club committee member Rose Ferguson - former model, Vogue contributor and celebrity nutritionist - for her tips on feeling our best whilst also having fun this Christmas (including cures for one drink too many).

Rose’s nutrition & wellness 101

1. Get outside, resist staying indoors. The week between Christmas and NYE is your friend because no one is calling or emailing you, what bliss. Aim to get out at least 4 times a week, even if it’s only 20 minutes. The tv and the sofa may be beckoning, but being outdoors will leave you feeling much, much better.

2. Don’t screw up things for the new year by committing the most tempting Christmas ritual of all: snacking. Constant grazing is what exhausts things like our insulin as it has to work overtime to digest everything we’re throwing its way. By all means, enjoy all the Christmas food - it’s part of the fun - but try to stick to the usual meal times.

3. Don’t go cold water swimming at this time of year if you don’t know what you’re doing. Have 10 seconds of a cold shower each day instead, it’s great for your dopamine and mood, and it’s a much gentler way to start.

4. Take milk thistle. You can’t take it as a one-off to cure a hangover, it’s an accumulative aid, but if you take it consistently it will really help your liver.

5. A hangover quick fix is to take electrolytes.  Either have some good quality salt and water with lemon, which is full of potassium or buy good quality electrolytes. A big part of a hangover is dehydration and this is the fastest way to fix it.

6. Don’t drop your fibre intake. When we drink excessively it disturbs our microbiome. This is basically the natural force field in us that supports our immune system and helps us digest. Fibre feeds the microbiome, so a simple rule of thumb is to always eat a big array of fruit and veg, especially during times of heavier drinking.

7. Intermittent fasting will help you tons at this time of year. Give yourself a 12-hour eating window and a 12-hour resting period during which you only digest water, herbal teas or black coffee. Try to be honest with yourself and don’t let your eating windows creep into longer time periods (we’ve all been guilty of it at some point!).

8. Finally, enjoy Christmas! It’s a time to have fun. I hate any advice that suggests you should resist enjoyment, just give your body a break in between.

My motto is: be unrestricted, but smart.
